This locomotive belongs to DF4 diesel locomotive series. Because it is numbered 1893, which is the same as the number of the year in which Mao Tsetung was born,  it was chosen to be Mao Tsetung locomotive.
Currently, this locomotive is used for trains with freight on the railway line from Beijing to Hongkong, but sometimes it pulls train with passengers, especially during winter holidays when many people go home for spring festival.

This photo was taken on Feb 18th, 2006. You can see that the special locomotive is used for trains with passengers.
